CES 2015: Dish Unveils Sling TV With ESPN, Disney & Turner Networks

Have you ever wanted to leave cable and satellite providers behind without losing access to some of the most popular cable channels? For sports fans, that day is coming soon.

At the beginning of CES 2015, Dish Network announced Sling TV, a new internet TV service. For only $20 a month, Sling TV subscribers will be able to watch ESPN, ESPN2, Disney Channel, ABC Family, Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel, TNT, CNN, TBS, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. Additional channels will be available in add-on packs for $5 more per month.

The ESPN networks are among the highest rated basic cable channels and their inclusion in Sling TV will likely be a big draw for sports fans. Thus far, ESPN’s parent company, Disney and the Turner networks appear to be Dish’s primary partners on Sling TV. But if the service proves to be popular, more partner channels will likely sign on.

Via CNET, Sling TV CEO Roger Lynch explained that “Millennials don’t choose paid TV. So we designed a service based on how millennials consume content, with no contracts. You can come and go as you please.”

One of the other selling points of Sling TV is that it doesn’t require a standalone box set. Sling TV will reportedly work on Playstation Network, Xbox Live, Amazon Fire TV, IOS and Android smartphones and tablets, PC computers, and Roku media streamers.

Dish is expected to launch Sling TV within the next few weeks. And it likely won’t be the only standalone package designed to draw viewers away from traditional cable and satellite services. But with some of the biggest cable channels already on board for Sling TV’s launch, it will be difficult for a competitor to match that lineup.
