The Answer? Dockers Close In On Gumbleton

The Fremantle Dockers are edging closer to a deal with AFL free agent Scott Gumbleton, but will not pull the trigger until more medical tests are completed to prove the fitness of the oft-injured Western Australian native.

The Dockers’ attack was often criticised in 2013 for lacking an extra tall alongside Matthew Pavlich, who will be 32 next season and managed just 12 games last season, and the smaller Chris Mayne. The club is hoping Gumbleton can provide the answer after the unlucky Kepler Bradley failed to make much impact and missed most of last season with an ACL injury.

The Dockers appear to have passed on de-listed Geelong veteran James Podsiadly to fill the void and are instead targeting the 25-year-old Gumbleton, a player who has struggled mightly in the past with injury.

Gumbleton has played just 35 senior games since Essendon selected him with the No.2 pick in the 2006 draft and managed just seven games for the Dons last season, kicking 12 goals.

Fremantle are also supposedly looking to add some depth to the club list in the form of seldom used Hawthorn wing Xavier Ellis.

The 25-year-old has been in Western Australia meeting with both the Dockers and West Coast and is in search of a home that will provide the 86-game veteran will more ample playing opportunity.

Ellis played 23 games in both 2008 and 2010, but has managed just 16 over the past three seasons.

The Dockers have added one player thus far in free agency- former Melbourne lottery pick Colin Sylivia on a three-year deal.

Free agency closes on Friday, October 25.

The Fremantle free agency rumours come on the back of news the club topped the $50 million turnover mark for the first time.

2012 had previously been Fremantle’s best year ($46 million), leading to record 44,007 members in 2013.
