SXSW Photos & Review: Soundgarden Rocks an Austin Rooftop

Friday night topped a rocket-fueled day at SXSW with a roaring performance by the legendary Soundgarden. Guitar Center and DIRECTV combined forces for their Guitar Center Sessions tapings, bringing former Crave Band of The Month The Wild Feathers and rock royalty Soundgarden to the rooftop of the Starr Building for a night of unforgettable music.

Chris Cornell led guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron – in possibly his final Soundgarden performance for some time – through a set that leaped all over the band’s lengthy catalog. Opening with punk-strut favorite “Kickstand,” the band moved through brooding but dutiful renditions of the unexpected “Hunted Down,” “Flower” and a slew of Superunknown favorites to celebrate the album’s 20th anniversary: “My Wave,” “Limo Wreck,” “Mailman,” “Superunknown” and “Fresh Tendrils,” among others.
