The unusual pairing of Kendrick Lamar and Tame Impala has produced ‘Backwards’, a remix of a recent hit from the Aussie pysch rock outfit for the upcoming Divergent soundtrack.
The sci-fi blockbuster features a pretty amazing soundtrack cast, including the likes of A$AP Rocky, Snow Patrol, Ellie Goulding and Skrillex as well as a bunch of strange and wonderful pairings.
Lamar provides vocals over the 2012 Tame Impala hit ‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards’ while the Aussie five-piece maintain a spot on the chorus.
Tame Impala Reveal New Side Project
Divergent music supervisor Randall Poster discussed the challenge of mixing such diverse sounds on one record with MTV.
“I think that one of the challenges for a movie like this is that it’s set in the future and so you sort of have to figure out, ‘OK, what might music in the future sound like?'” Poster told MTV recently of the apparently Yeezus inspired soundtrack.
“The film is actually set not in a perfected future, but actually kind of in a future world that is deteriorating. And so we wanted to create a musical element that had reflected on current music sounds, but also felt kind of time-forward and had a certain futuristic element.”
The Divergent: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack was released March 11 and is due for cinema release in Australia on April 10.
