Matt Cameron Takes a Break From Soundgarden: Replacement Search Underway

Drummer Matt Cameron, the thundering rhythmic backbone and revitalizing creative force to both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, has announced that he’s taking a leave of absence from Soundgarden after nearly 30 years behind the kit with the band.

The 50 year old percussionist has kept up a relentless schedule of recording and touring over the past year, both in support of Soundgarden’s reunion album King Animal and subsequent tour, as well as Pearl Jam’s new release Lightning Bolt and the marathon of dates the band is currently on. The intensity has taken a toll, and Cameron is filtering his responsibilities to tackle one band at a time – for the time being. Read his statement below, posted on Soundgarden’s official site.

Hello Knights of the Soundtable faithful,

I will be taking 2014 off from Soundgarden touring due to prior commitments promoting “Lightning Bolt” with my brothers in Pearl Jam and the desire to have more time at home with my family. I am trying to balance the many twists and turns of my awesome music career. This is temporary. I am still an active member of Soundgarden. Chris, Ben, Kim and I are in the process of finding the perfect substitute for the upcoming Soundgarden dates in 2014.

Thank you all for listening and the Years of Support!
