Kanye West has Achieved God Status

You can now go worship at the sneakers of Kanye West. A life-size, gold sculpture depicting the controversial rapper being crucified has been erected on Hollywood Boulevard courtesy of street artist Plastic Jesus.

The Los Angeles-based pop culture provocateur whose work often trolls (in a good way) the way we look at celebrity is best known for his “Stop Making Stupid People Famous” motto, which has become a brand onto itself.

That will probably change with “False Idol”, the title of the Yeezus sculpture, which does not place Kanye on a cross, but there’s not doubt he’s being crucified with outstretched arms, nails in his palms, and wearing a crown of thorns and some fly Yeezy Boost 350 sneakers.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Plastic Jesus dropped that “False Idol” is collaboration with Ginger, the artist who had the new channels in a tither with the nude Trump sculptures this past summer. He also explained that the statue isn’t necessarily a condemnation on Kanye West, but a reflection of ourselves, “[West is] a genius at writing and producing but he’s not a God, and that’s where we put him. Until there’s an issue in his life or a hiccup in his career, then we crucify him.”

The timing for all this couldn’t be better as this weekend’s Academy Awards is being held down the block at the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood and Highland Center, this Sunday, Feb. 16th.

A week later on Feb. 24th, Plastic Jesus will showcase “False Idols” among his other works at Gibson Brands Sunset in West Hollywood. The exhibition with Billy Morrison is called Anesthesia: The Art of Oblivion and opens to the public on Feb. 25th.
