In true Chicago fashion, anytime a music festival is on the books, the clouds open up and give us a little present to kick off the weekend in murky style. This morning gave us a consistent festival welcome as rain poured down on what were very likely some incredibly dry grounds down at Douglas Park. Thankfully the rain has subsided, and there is even some sun, so here is hoping to avoid a repeat of last year’s mud-filled, cold setting as Riot Fest 2016 kicks off.

Riot Fest has become known for putting together incredibly diverse and impressive line-ups for the events that take place across major cities each year. That holds true for Riot Fest Chicago, which is returning to Douglas Park, located on the city’s southwest side, where six stages will host some of the best rock bands from the past four decades.

What’s in store? Check out the full lineup for more, and be sure to give a look to the wide array of aftershows happening after the festival closes down. (Like the Dillinger Escape Plan, tonight at Cobra Lounge.) Here’s who we’ll be looking to see:

  • Friday: Diarrhea Planet, Gwar, Julian Marley (performing Bob Marley & the Wailers’ Exodus), Glassjaw, Jimmy Eat World, The Flaming Lips

  • Saturday: Smoking Popes, The Hold Steady, People Under the Stairs, Fitz & the Tantrums, Method Man & Redman, Morrissey

  • Sunday: Juliette Lewis & the Licks, Tiger Army, Thursday, Bad Religion, Andrew W.K., Deftones, Sleater-Kinney, The Original Misfits

Riot Fest is Sept. 16-18 in Douglas Park. Tickets are available here.
