Twinkies Are Back And in a Very Gourmet Twinkie Way

It wasn’t so long ago we were faced with the reality of a world without Twinkies. But in 2013, they were purchased out of bankruptcy for nearly half of $1 billion. Now they’re not only back, the dessert has become the mold for a gourmet phenomenon.

Just like its pastry pal, the donut, Twinkies have never been trending harder. A key ingredient to any good food trend is revamping classic nostalgia with a new twist. In the case of the Twinkie or donut, the trend involves healthy ingredients instead of the garbage we grew up on, thus less fat content and none of that high fructose corn syrup or refined sugar.

To take the nostalgic component a little further, gourmet Twinkie bakers, twinkers (that word will trend soon, too, just watch), are pulling other sweet tooth favorites, like M&Ms, red velvet, shredded coconut and sprinkles to add to their Twinkie twist.
