‘The Simpsons’ Predicted President Trump 16 Years Ago

Those of you who are in a state of disbelief right now certainly aren’t alone in thinking that the words “President Trump” are a complete travesty. You also clearly don’t take episodes of TV shows set in the distant future seriously. If you did, you would have seen this turn of events coming years ago — 16 years ago, to be more precise.

In the following clip from a Season 11 episode of The Simpsons titled “Bart to the Future” which aired on March 19, 2000, we see an adult version of Lisa Simpson giving a press conference as America’s first straight female President. (Note: this prediction, too, is now currently in the running as completely accurate since Hillary Clinton failed to win the election.) In the very next scene, she makes a brief — but now terribly foreboding — reference to President Trump and the budget crunch he’s sure to leave the country in.

The Simpsons Predicts President Trump

So how did such a throwaway line come to be? According to the episode’s writer Dan Greaney, it “just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane.” You don’t say. He also mentions that it was meant as “a warning to America” — one we clearly didn’t listen to.

If only Hillary’s concession speech had gone something like this one from the Season 9 episode “Trash of the Titans,” we could all at least die laughing.
