What Do You All Think Of A Mom Charging Her 5-Year-Old Daughter Rent?

I can barely pay bills and I’m a grown man (well, some don’t agree), so I can’t even imagine what it would be like to pay for stuff at five-years-old. Well, Essence Evans’ daughter has to face that reality.

Evans has created quite the stir on the internet after she revealed that she charges her five-year-old daughter rent in order to show her the importance of money and to prepare her for the real world. The post has since been deleted, but here’s a screengrab of it:

Here’s just some of what Evans said:

“I make my five-year-old pay rent. Every week she gets $7 dollars in allowance. But I explained to her that in the real world most people spend most of their paycheck on bills with little to spend on themselves. I make her give me $5 dollars back. $1 for rent $1 for water $1 for electricity $1 for cable and $1 for food.”

According to Evans though, she’s taking the $5 and putting it away for her daughter’s future, a fund her daughter will be able to get when she turns 18.

Evans post was shared over 300k times before being taken down, and plenty of people were chiming in with their opinion. While most praised Evans for teaching her young daughter about the real world, some didn’t think it was a good idea at all. Here are just some of the negative responses:

“I get this I really do but I will not make my son pay to live where he belongs to be. That’s just wrong in my opinion but once he turns 16 I will make him get a job to pay for his own gas and insurance for his car.”

“Its YOUR job to raise your child. Put the money in a savings account if you want, but no child should be made to feel that they should pay for what a parent should provide.”

Now it’s your turn to chime in. What do you think about this? Would you do it to your child? Sound off!
