Teens Vote YouTube as “Most Cool” Brand, Wall Street Journal As “Least Cool” Brand

YouTube has been voted the “most cool” brand in a survey held by Google, with the Wall Street Journal and Vice been deemed the least cool brands by Generation Z.

The survey saw 1,100 13-17 year-olds vote on which brands they believed were the “most cool” along with revealing how familiar they were with them, with YouTube beating out the likes of Netflix and Google in order to rise to the top. Meanwhile, while teens were familiar with the Wall Street Journal they didn’t believe the brand to be particularly cool, while the messaging service WhatsApp was also deemed uncool by the teenage masses.

With Google staging the survey, a lot of the results came out in the search engine giant’s favor. Along with YouTube, a company that it owns, coming out on top, Google was also deemed the third coolest brand behind Netflix and, unsurprisingly, one of the brands that the teens were the most familiar with. The Wall Street Journal was also voted as one of the least cool brands by 18-24-year-olds, with a separate survey seeing the publication rank just ahead of TMZ.

The survey, taken as part of a magazine created by Google dedicated to assessing teens’ relationships with brands titled “It’s Lit: A Guide to What Teens Think is Cool” (which deserves all of the Steve Buscemi “how do you do, fellow kids?” memes), also saw YouTube topping the list of best streaming media platforms, beating out the likes of Netflix, Spotify and Hulu. The survey took place from June 27th to July 1st, 2016.

Google also seemingly took a pop at millennials in its magazine, saying of Generation Z: “Unlike millennials, this group is ambitious, engaged, and feel like they can change the world.” It continued: “For Generation Z, what’s cool is also a representation of their values, their expectations of themselves, their peers, and the brands they hold in the highest regard.”

Update: The original version of this story suggested that the Wall Street Journal’s position as the “least cool” brand was linked to the controversy surrounding YouTuber PewDiePie. This information was incorrect.
