2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance: Mazda Unveils Road-Ready 2017 MX-5 RF

With the 2016 editions of Monterey Car Week, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca upon us, Crave will be on the scene to explore the worlds of elite classic automobiles and modern supercars.

The long weekend of concept cars and new model reveals scheduled for Monterey Car Week and the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance don’t really get rolling until tonight. But, Mazda got a jump on big luxury brands and announced all of the details on the next evolution of the MX-5.

The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Roadster is on display along Cannery Row – adding a retractable fastback convertible (hence “RF”) to the MX-5 line. The new fastback version was officially announced during a special event at the 2016 New York International Auto Show – while the 2016 standard MX-5 was winning Car of the Year honors. Mazda is using the 2016 Monterey Car Week to announce a new MX-5 RF Launch Edition.

Limited to a run of 1,000 for enthusiasts looking to get in on the new model, the Launch Edition will feature “Machine Gray” metallic paint, Auburn Nappa leather interior trim and a hand-painted black roof panel. Buyers will be able to choose between a six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. Any MX-5 driver who chooses the automatic should be immediately disqualified from purchasing said car, but that’s Mazda’s call.

Mazda North American Operations will offer the opportunity for preorders to a select group of MX-5 fans for a limited time. They’ll be notified by email and offered a chance to buy in early. After this initial period, the general public will get its chance to pick up the Launch Edition.

The standard 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF will arrive in showrooms later this year.
