Netflix Reveals Australian Launch Date, iiNet Unmetered Deal

Netflix will officially begin streaming all of its television and movie goodness in Australia and New Zealand on 24th March, offering standard definition, high-definition and 4K ultra-high definition plans.

Originally not expected to arrive until late 2015, Netflix’s Aussie arrival was later bumped up to some time in late March. Monthly pricing details will arrive at launch on the 24th, but have long thought to be set around the $10 per month mark.

Reed Hastings, Netflix co-founder and chief executive officer, says, “Many Aussies and Kiwis have heard a lot about Netflix over the years, and we’re excited they’ll get to experience our unique blend of Netflix original content, local series and films, and popular movies and TV shows from around the world, all for a low monthly price.”

According to a press release, Netflix will be available on all major Australian broadband providers. The company has also announced the first instance of un-metered quota-free Netflix access in Australia, available to iiNet customers.

At launch, Netflix will be available on Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, Philips and HiSense smart TVs, as well as Fetch TV‘s second-generation set-top box. It will also be available on some game consoles, Apple TV, Google Chromecast and Apple and Android tablets and smartphones. Netflix gift cards will be available for purchase at participating Aussie retailers such as Woolworths, Coles, Big W, 7-Eleven, Australia Post and Officeworks.

Aside from its original content, including the magnificent US version of House Of Cards, Netflix’s Australian and New Zealand services will feature exclusive and licensed content from the likes of Roadshow Entertainment, Beyond Distribution, the ABC and The Walt Disney Company.

The service will be in competition with Fairfax Media and Nine Entertainment Co’s Stan streaming platform, and Foxtel and The Seven Network’s Presto Entertainment service, which is expected to launch later this year.

Netflix have also newly-launched social media accounts for their Australian and New Zealand operations, which can be found over on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Tumblr.
