The Top 10 Most Popular Passwords of 2014 are Unbelievably Stupid

Considering the amount of news stories circulating about hackers breaking into yet another online system last year, you’d think the vast majority of people would have came to the reasonable conclusion that the best way to defend themselves from such attacks would be to create a strong password. Unfortunately that doesn’t appear to be the case, as a list of the top 10 most popular passwords of 2014 has revealed.

According to SplashData, a company which creates password management applications, the most popular passwords of last year included “1234,” “123456,” 12345678″ and, yes, “password.”

Here are the top 10 most frequently used passwords of last year, according to the company:

  1. 123456
  2. password
  3. 12345
  4. 12345678
  5. qwerty
  6. 123456789
  7. 1234
  8. baseball
  9. dragon
  10. football

We found ourselves frequently surprised by how competent hackers were at obtaining users’ personal information last year, but looking at this list we’re now shocked that more incidents didn’t occur. In this day and age, it beggars belief that so many people are still choosing “password” as their passwords, and that it has been the second most popular password over the course of the past two years, with 123456 also retaining its first place title.

If your can see your password in the above top 10 list, then rest assured you probably deserve to get hacked. It’s for your own good.
