She was an only child. Due to her father's career, the family moved to Washington, D.C. then Connecticut, and finally to Long Island. Natalie Portman was a straight-A student since grade school and graduated from Syosset High School with honors. (She skipped the premiere of "Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace" so she could study.) She lived in New York until she was accepted to Harvard. She is fluent in Hebrew and English and has dual citizenship with Israel and the United States.
At the age of 11, Natalie Portman was discovered at a pizza parlor by a model scout. Natalie subsequently landed her own acting agent, and made her film debut in "The Professional." She said of growing up as a working child actor, "Ok, so I didn't really go to high school parties, and yeah, I didn't touch pot till I was in my 20s. I didn't get flat-out drunk until I went to college. But I think that's a good thing in many ways" (marieclaire.com).
Natalie Portman has since starred in more than 25 films, including her most famous role as Padme Amidala in the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy. She won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress and earned an Academy Award nomination for her role in "Closer." She nabbed the Oscar for Best Actress for her role as a ballerina in "Black Swan."
Natalie Portman also hosted "Saturday Night Live," and performed as an angry gangsta rapper. Natalie has admitted to having terrible stage fright and is afraid she'll miss her lines in a live performance.
Natalie told Madame, "I have always considered myself extremely lucky. I know very well that there are very few elected officials in this business and that many of us, despite their talent and hard work, will not come out of the lot. These are the laws of chance." She added, in regards to being seen as an object of beauty, "I obviously do not see myself that way. I prefer 'about beauty' or 'subject of desire." One can say that about all women, whatever their life and career."
Natalie Portman is also a vegetarian sine she was eight years old, after seeing a demonstration of laser surgery on a chicken at a medical conference.
Natalie Portman has a son, Aleph, born in 2011. She told Vogue, "I've been trying to look more like a lady recently. I used to be happy in a T-shirt and sweatpants, and now I feel like I want to make myself a little more grown-up " now that I'm a mom."
