Katharine McPhee went to Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, where she performed in school plays. As a teenager, she struggled with eating disorders. She was also misdiagnosed with a learning disability and was known as the "pretty but stupid" girl because she had trouble reading.

Katharine McPhee went to Boston Conservatory, majoring in musical theatre, but dropped out after three semesters to try out for television pilots. She appeared in the film "Crazy."

Encouraged by her family, she auditioned for "American Idol" and the rest is history. She told popentertainment.com, "Since I was really young, I have always sung. My mom is a vocal teacher, so we constantly had students in and out of the house. I was always surrounded by music."

Katharine McPhee subsequently released a single, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/My Destiny." She released her solo album in 2007 and it sold 116,000 copies in its first week. Her second album "Unbroken" debuted at number 27 on the Billboard 200 chart. She followed it up with a Christmas album in 2010.

In 2006, she signed with Sexy Hair Concept to become their celebrity spokesperson.

Katharine McPhee segued into acting with appearances in "Ugly Betty," "The House Bunny," and "CSI: NY." Katharine McPhee is currently on the NBC show "Smash."

Katharine McPhee is the spokesperson for the Malaria No More organization.

Katharine McPhee is married to Nick Cokas, 19 years her senior. She told Stuff, "When I turned 20, I thought it was a good age to explore. You're no longer a teenager, so it's okay [to date older guys]. I gravitated toward them, and I love them. They're just wiser, and they're less about themselves and more about you."

Katharine McPhee said of her new move, "I've been stressed because I'm moving my whole life to New York and I'm a valley girl! I was born and raised in the valley. I spent a lot of time in New York but I never thought I could possibly live there for as long as I might have to live there.
