She is of Puerto Rican ancestry. As a child, Jennifer Lopez took singing and dancing lessons and spent her education at Catholic schools, finishing at the all-girls Preston High School.

Jennifer Lopez dated (and later married, then divorced) her first boyfriend at the age of 15. After high school, she became a back-up dancer for "New Kids on the Block," and a Fly Girl on "In Living Color." She then segued into acting with roles in "Hotel Malibu," "Second Chances," and films "Money Train," "Jack," and "Blood and Wine," but it was her role as Selena in "Selena" that thrust her in the spotlight. More films followed, including, "Anaconda," "U Turn," and "Out of Sight."

After "Selena" Jennifer Lopez made a demo album. Her single was released in 1999. She released a second album and her popularity continued to rise. More movie roles followed, including "The Cell," "The Wedding Planner," and "Monster-in-Law," among others. Albums hit the market and she became unstoppable, releasing seven studio albums.

Jennifer Lopez also launched her own clothing line, J. Lo. She has also released up to fourteen fragrances.

Jennifer Lopez moved into television as an executive producer on "South Beach." She also created the reality series, "DanceLife."

In 2008, Jennifer Lopez gave birth to twins Maximilian David and Emme Maribel. She told Vanity Fair about her divorce to Marc Anthony, "Sometimes it doesn't work " and that's sad. But I remain an eternal optimist about love. I believe in love. I'm a hopeless romantic and passionate person when it comes to love"

In 2011, Jennifer Lopez joined the tenth season of "American Idol" as a judge. When she returned as a judge for the eleventh season, she earned a reported $20 million.

Of her age and dating younger men, Jennifer Lopez told Vogue, "I don't feel older, and I don't feel like I look it, either, so I am just acting the same way I have always acted." Jennifer Lopez said of being a mother, "I am a lover, and with my kids I am even softer. I realize with my son, I have to sometimes be tough, especially now when he's pushing boundaries. With my daughter, I can get a little stern with her and she pretty much will listen. But my son will just scream and yell and run. I'm like, what do I do with this?"
