She is a mix of Italian, Irish and Scottish ancestry. Gwen is the second oldest of four children, and as a child, her parents exposed her to folk music.
In school, Gwen suffered from dyslexia and ADHD and has been medicated ever since. She made her onstage debut during a high school talent show and sang I Have Confidence. As a teen, she worked at Dairy Queen and later worked at the MAC makeup counter. After she graduated high school, she attended Fullerton College before transferring to California State University.
Gwen joined the band No Doubt after her brother Eric formed it. But she moved from backing vocals to lead singer when their original lead, John Spence, committed suicide. She told the Washington Post, All I wanted to ever do was get married and have babies, have a house. So its weird that Im in a rock group.
The band finally hit its stride on their third album, Tragic Kingdom. The album sold more than sixteen million copies. Gwen Stefani had a seven-year relationship with band-mate Tony Kanal and most of the songs on the Tragic Kingdom album are about their break-up. She became known for her red lipstick and belly-baring midriff shirts. She told People, I havent seen my real hair color since ninth grade! And when she travels incognito, she doesnt wear lipstick.
While she continued making albums with No Doubt, Gwen Stefani began collaborating with Moby and Eve.
Gwen Stefani released her own solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. In 2004 it went multi-platinum. People proclaimed, Its official: Gwen Stefani is the new Madonna. She followed it up with a second solo album, The Sweet Escape.
She returned to No Doubt with their album Push and Shove. But music is not her only endeavor. Gwen launched a fragrance as part of her L.A.M.B. collection of clothing and accessories. Regarding her clothing line, Gwen Stefani said, Im literally designing for myself. I get to wear the clothes and enjoy my little dream come true. In 2006, she released a line of limited-edition dolls inspired by her onstage styles. She has also been listed on FHM in their Sexiest List.
She also made appearances in films, including roles in Mr. & Mrs. Smith and The Aviator.
Gwen is also active in charity, once donating $1 million for relief in Japan following the earthquake, as well as hosting a fundraiser with First Lady Michelle Obama in 2012.
Gwen Stefani is married to musician Gavin Rossdale. Raised a Catholic, she carried rosary beads and her grandmothers Catholic prayer book at her Anglican wedding in 2002. Gwen and Gavin have two children together, Kingston James and Zuma Nesta. The family divides their time between Los Angeles and Gavins home country of England.
