Taryn Southern described herself on Twitter in 2013 as “Musical comedian/actress/digital media consultant /columnist/ tv host/adventurist/foodie/cat lover.” She explained: “Essentially, I’m a one stop show for digital media production. I write, produce, edit, act, host, distribute, market, interact, and strategize about online content and audience building on a daily basis.”
Taryn grew up in Kansas and took part in theatrical productions and regional talk shows. She considered pursuing a career in Broadway. But it was her experience on “American Idol,” in which she realized she had a “crippling fear of performing in front of a live audience.”
She graduated from Wichita East High School in 2003; she graduated from the University of Miami, with a B.S. in Anthropology and a B.A. in Journalism. She said, “in a weird way, Journalism and Anthropology are strongly related to acting and hosting, because at the end of the day you have to research and understand the human condition in order to tell the story you want” (newmediarockstars.com).
After her stint on “American Idol,” she moved to Los Angeles and produced a travel show “Project MyWorld,” where she traveled the world in order to meet MySpace friends.
In 2008, she co-founded Webutantes, a new media studio. Her other appearances include roles on “Rules of Engagement,” “Battle: Los Angeles” and the video “Keep it in Your Pants.”
Her guilty pleasure is getting a pedicure and reading trashy gossip magazines. Her pet peeves include laziness and people “who choose to take a passive approach to their work or their lives. In other words, people who don’t take accountability. Also, people who don’t like my cat…and people with B.O. on airplanes.”
Taryn Southern said her weakness is “sugar…definitely Google. I spend way too much time Googling weird shit.” Her favorite video game is “Kinect Adventures.” She also said she’s a bit of a food snob. She admits to sleeping in her SpongeBob Squarepants boxers almost every single night.
Taryn Southern likes working in new media for the risks it affords versus old media.
Taryn works in the digital space, writes books and has released a comedy album. She even has an iPhone app called TarynToGo.
She lives in Los Angeles, but spends time in New York.
