Rousey is the consensus #1 pound-for-pound female MMA fighter in the world and the #9 pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC, ranking ahead of many successful male fighters. 

 

Rousey was born in Riverside County, California on February 1, 1987 to Ron Rousey and AnnMaria De Mars. However, she was raised in Jamestown, North Dakota by her mother and stepfather. Her mother was a decorated judoka and would play-fight with Ronda at an early age.

 

Rousey participated in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens at 17 years of age. She was the youngest judoka in the entire Games. This year she also earned a gold medal at the 2004 World Junior Judo Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

 

In 2006, she attended the Junior World Championships again and earned the bronze medal. She was the first U.S. athlete to ever win two Junior World medals.

 

In 2007, Rousey moved up a weight class to 70 kg. She is currently ranked as one of the top three women judokas in the world. At the 2007 World Judo Championships Ronda won the silver medal in the middleweight division. She also took home the gold at the 2007 Pan American Games.

 

Ronda attended the Olympics again in 2008 and earned a bronze medal.  She earned a bronze medal in the Beijing Olympic Games. She was the first American to accomplish this feat since the sports inception to the games in 1992.

 

Rousey retired from Judo at 21 and then began her MMA career the next year. Her first amateur fight was against Hayden Munoz on August 6, 2010. Rousey defeated her by submission with an armbar in 23 seconds. This became her signature move. She participated in two more amateur fights and defeated both opponents with an armbar submission. Rousey then announced plans to turn pro.

 

Rousey’s first professional mixed martial arts fight was on March 27, 2011 at King of the Cage: Turning Point. Her opponent, Ediane Gomes, fell to Rousey’s armbar in 25 seconds. Over the next two years she defeated Charmaine Tweet, Sarah D’Alelio, Julida Budd, and Meisha Tate. Her fight against Meisha Tate earned Rousey the title of Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion. She defended this title against Sarah Kaufman.

 

In 2012, Rousey became the first female to sign with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Rousey defended her title as the first UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion against Liz Carmouche on February 23, 2013. She defeated Carmouche at 4:49 by submission to by armbar.

 

She has continued to dominate the world of women’s MMA with a current record of 8 – 0. She will defend the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion title against fellow Olympian and undefeated fighter, Sara McMann, on February, 2014.

 

Her athletic success has earned her promotional contracts, a Showtime special (All Access: Ronda Rousey), an appearance on Conan, and several magazine appearances. Most notably, she appeared in ESPN The Magazine’s 2012 Body Issue. She was also featured on the cover of Maxim in September 2013 and earned a spot on their 2013 Hot 100 list. She will star in the feature films The Expendables 3 and Fast & Furious 7.
