Maika Dillon Monroe, who also goes by the name Maika Buckley, began kiteboarding when she was 13 years old. Her father, who was a kiteboarder as well, got her an instructor that year, and has been unable to pull her away from the sport since. By her senior year in high school, Maika decided to move to the north coast of the Dominican Republic, known as Cabarete, in order to train full time for competitions. She trained alongside fellow kiteboarders Alex Soto and Robinson Hilario.
Along with her kiteboarding career, Maika is also an actress. Her career onscreen began with a series of commercials for products including Pizza Hut, Nintendo Wii and Purina. Then in 2006, she was cast in the film "Bad Blood," along with its sequel in 2012, "Bad Blood...the Hunger." Along with those films, she is probably most popular for her role in "At Any Price," co-starring Dennis Quaid and Zac Efron. In 2013, she will also have roles in the films "The Bling Ring," starring Ema Watson, and "Labor Day" with Tobey Maguire and Kate Winslet.
When she is not hitting the waves or in front of the camera, Maika makes a good living as a fashion model. She even designs clothing, such as the summer 2012 women’s clothing line for Airbound Apparel. And if that wasn't enough, she is also highly involved in the charity "Kiteboarding 4 Kids," whose goal is to benefit the underprivileged youth of the Dominican Republic, a place and people Maika is quite fond of.
