Kari has three sisters. As a child, she was a tomboy and rode horses and competed in sports with the boys. Kari said, Since I was young I have always been a huge planner and goal setter. My mom taught me to be that wayshe really is my hero (movesmagazine.com).

Kari graduated from Highland Ranch High School in the class of 2003 and was ranked 49th in the nation by prepvolleyball.com. She was named All-Colorado by the Rocky Mountain News in 2004 and earned first team all-state honors in 2004. She was heavily recruited and chose to attend the University of Florida on a full scholarship because of its great program, atmosphere and coaching staff. Kari selected it over Hawaii, Southern California and Minnesota.

Through high school, Kari had also modeled, appearing on magazine covers, including Campus Girls USA, CoverGirl, Self, and Yoga Magazine. Kari put acting and modeling on the shelf as she focused on her sport. An ankle injury, however, in her junior year prevented her from competing. She graduated from the university in 2009 with a Bachelors degree in telecommunications.

Afterwards, Kari Klinkenborg moved to Los Angeles to pursue modeling and acting. I always said after graduation I would go to L.A., its just something I had to do or Id never be fulfilled, I worried that Id always be left wondering what if.

When the Womens National Volleyball Association was formed, Kari became a correspondent and spokesperson. Kari is also the founder of Feeding Soles, a project designed to help inner city kids in need.

Kari Klinkenborg told volleywood.net, her best friends would describe her as independent, vibrant, stubborn, competitive, loyal, honest, spontaneous, caring, realistic, forgiving, determined, self-motivated and private and her secret obsession is American Sign Language. She added, Im a total girl when it comes to receiving flowers, I know they are a waste of moneybut I LOVE getting them, its just so thoughtful and makes my day, and they just brighten up any room!!!!!!

Kari said a guy can impress her by just [being] genuine! I think when a guy is confident and not afraid to be himself in any situation, that is so attractive! Also when he actually pays attention to what Im saying, and really wants to get to know me and what Im all about. Oh, and has a great smile. I cant resist those!!!
