Gemma Arterton was born polydactyl and at birth her doctor tied off the sixth digits to remove them. She also had a crumpled ear, which was surgically corrected. “I was a freakish baby. A bit of an oddball. And I still feel like that now.”
When she was 5, her parents divorced and she was raised by her mother. Gemma went to Gravesend Grammar School for Girls, and later attended the Miskin Theatre School. She received a full grant to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, from which she graduated in 2007. While a student, Gemma worked as a make-up salesgirl. She added, “I actually had a cockney accent before I went to drama school. It’s softened quite a bit.”
She rose to fane as Kelly in “St. Trinian’s” and has appeared in “Clash of the Titans,” “Quantum of Solace” and “The Disappearance of Alice Creed,” among other projects. She was also the face of Avon for their new fragrance. She said, “In comparison to many actresses I think I’m really average. When I got the Bond film there was this big hoo-ha about me not being hot enough, I have to say I agree – I don’t think I’m in that realm.”
Gemma stays grounded; “I have this attitude to life that is not to take anything too seriously and not worry about anything.”
Gemma added in a later interview about “Prince of Persia:” “They sent me to a personal trainer, wanted to get my teeth done, hair extensions, make me look like somebody else…I became the thing they wanted me to be for the part. But I don’t agree with what they think is beautiful because it’s not me.”
She told The Guardian when she first started, “It was if the world had done me a favor. Especially on the bigger movies, it was like, ‘You’re lucky you’re here, so don’t speak up’ and that was frustrating.”
Gemma Arterton is a fan of the Charlton Athletic Football Club. She is also an ambassador for the Sky Rainforest Rescue. “It’s me just being there and showing something, rather than being like a saint. I’m not.”
When not traveling for work, she lives with her husband Stefano Catelli in London, England.
