Sofia Black-D'Elia is of Jewish and Italian descent. She grew up in North Jersey and began acting when she was about five years old. While taking dance classes at Broadway Bound, she developed an interest in theater. “I really loved being in front of people and performing.” Her big break came when she was 17 and landed on the soap opera “All My Children.”
In 2010, she landed on the MTV adaptation of the British drama “Skins,” where she played an openly lesbian teenager. Sofia said she based on her character Tea on one of her high school friends. “Tea for me was actually very similar to one of my friends growing up in high school. I kind of used her as my sounding board.”
Sofia Black-D'Elia said the challenge of playing her character “were the things that weren’t so much like me, which is her confidence and bravado, and her ability to run with the boys with her tough attitude.”
As for her racy scenes on the show, Sofia Black-D'Elia agreed they were awkward to film (insidetv.ew.com). “I’m more worried about my acting abilities than my nerves about being undressed in front of a crew…hopefully, over time, people will let go of the worry of the raciness of the show and the scandal because it’s much deeper.” She added, “I’m much more concerned with the opinions of the teenagers of America than the parents, because that’s who we were trying to reach.”
