Rachel Alice Marie Skarsten was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to parents Mary Aileen Self Skarsten and Dr. Stan Skarsten. Growing up, she trained with the Royal Academy of Dance for 12 years. At the same time, she also attended Claude Watson School for the Arts, majoring in both visual arts and the cello. Unfortunately, her life and potential career paths took a series of hard lefts as she not only injured her ankle and was forced to give up dance, but had also suddenly lost her father to pancreatic cancer at the age of 9. This sad turn of events may have been tragic, but it lead to her being discovered by an agent at her father's memorial, which in turn lead to being cast in her first major role on the series "Little Men" in 1998.

After "Little Men" ended, Rachel continued picking up small roles on television. Whether it was in series such as "Screech Owls" or TV movies like "Angels in the Infield," she remained busy up until being cast as a lead on the series "Birds of Prey," where she played Dinah Lance/Black Canary. After the series was cancelled, Rachel moved back to Canada from Los Angeles in order to finish high school and attain her double major in English Literature and Classical History at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario.

Since graduating, Rachel has returned to the world of television, playing recurring roles on series such as "Flashpoint," "The L.A. Complex," and even a lead on the SyFy series "Lost Girl." Along with her television roles, she has also starred in a few feature films of note, including "The Vow" and "Fifty Shades of Grey."
