Mia Kirshner was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on January 25, 1975. The daughter of a school teacher mother and journalist father, who also happened to be the direct descendant of  Holocaust survivors, she grew up in a middle class family and eventually went on to graduate from the Jarvis Collegiate Institute. She then went on to study Russian literature at McGill University. All the while, she had been acting professionally since the age of 15, having landed her first television role around that time on the series, "War of the Worlds."


By 1990, Mia was starring in her first recurring role on "Dracula: The Series," finding other small television roles to play during the time as well. At age 17, she convinced her father to sign a nudity waiver in order to play the role of a young dominatrix in the film, "Love & Human Remains," which also happened to be her big screen debut. This role would kickstart the actresses long of playing highly sexualized, bad girl types in movies and television, which she continues to play quite often, even now. She finally started to gain real notoriety as an actress around 2001, when she not only starred as a satirical version of Sarah Michelle Gellar's "Cruel Intentions" character in "Not Another Teen Movie," but also began to playing Mandy on the hit FOX series, "24." The Mandy character would go on to be a recurring guest on later seasons of the show as well.


Of course, Mia is most famous for playing Jenny Schecter on Showtime's "The L Word," a series based around the lives of of young lesbian, bisexual, and transgeder characters living in and around Los Angeles. She would go on to play this character for the entire series' run, which totaled six seasons. In 2010, she landed a recurring role on the CW series, "The Vampire Diaries," and in 2013, she became a series regular on SyFy's "Defiance."
