BioKristen Wiig is a mix of Norwegian, Irish, English and Scottish ancestry.
When she was three, Kristen and her family moved to Lancaster. She later moved to Rochester, New York. After a short period at Roanoke College, Wiig attended the University of Arizona. She took a college class in acting only to satisfy a course requirement, but her teacher suggested Kristen continue to pursue acting. Kristen said, I never considered myself to be funny maybe because socially I can be a little shy sometimes. I just didnt think you could be both.
Kristen Wiig dropped out of college and moved to Los Angeles where she joined The Groundlings. She worked odd jobs to support herself.
Kristen Wiig told Interview magazine, I probably lived more of a rock-star life when I was 15. I got in trouble a fair amount. I cared more about hanging out and skipping school than studyingI definitely ran with a pack of hoodlums, thats for sure.
She also appeared at the Empty Stage Comedy Theatre and the Spike TV show The Joe Schmo Show.
Kristen Wiig debuted on SNL on Season 31 on November 12, 2005. Her memorable characters include The Target Lady, Cheryl Bryant, Aunt Linda, as well as her impersonations of many real-life people.
She was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for her work on SNL.
With her increased status on the show, Kristen Wiig segued into film, appearing in Knocked Up, Walk Hard, Ghost Town, Adventureland, Extract, Whip It, Paul, MacGruber, All Good Things, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. She has also appeared in videos for Funny or Die.
But it was her role in Bridesmaids (in which she co-wrote) that garnered even more attention. The film was never nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Melissa McCarthy.
After seven seasons on SNL, Kristen Wiig left. I know a lot of people probably assume, Oh, shes leaving because she is going to be doing movies now and things like that, which I will be. But I always knew it was going to be seven and that was it. I think maybe if I were 22, I could see myself staying a little bit, but it just felt like the right time (usmagazine.com).
Kristen Wiig told Marie Claire, When youre on your deathbed, you probably arent counting the movies youve made. Youre looking at the people who are around you and thinking about the people in your life, and you cant lose how important that is because thats ultimately where happiness comes from.
