Kathryn "Katie" Aselton was born in Milbridge, Maine on October 1, 1978. As a teenager, she attended Narraguagus High School in Harrington, graduating in 1996. It was during her time in high school that Katie found herself competing in beauty competitions. Her most notable competition was the Miss Teen USA 1995 pageant, where she represented the state of Maine. While she didn't take the grand prize, she was ended up being the first-runner up.

After high school, Katie went to Boston University in Massachusetts, studying at their school of communications for two years before deciding she wanted to move to Los Angeles, California to pursue a career in acting. Her first professional acting role came in the form of two appearances on the controversial MTV series, "Undressed." Soon after, she met her soon-to-be husband, writer/actor Mark Duplass. The two went on to star in a short film, "Scrapple" which Duplass wrote. It was shown at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.

Katie studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York after initially moving to Los Angeles. From there, her star continued to rise as she is said to be one of the many talented actors (along with her husband) who rose to fame during the mumblecore movement of the early 2000s, which was essentially a series of low budget films heavily focused on naturalistic dialogue.  That being said, Katie starred in a series of these particular films, including "The Puffy Chair" and "Cyrus," before being cast on the popular comedy series, "The League." She has also written, directed, and starred in two films, "The Freebie" and "Black Rock."
