Karen David is a Canadian-British singer, actress and songwriter probably best known for her role on the BBC series “Waterloo Road.” She is set to appear in the film “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.”
Her middle name is Shenaz, and her nicknames are KD and Shenu. She was born in the foothills of the Himalayas but raised in Canada and London. Her father is from Madras and her mother is half Chinese.

As a teenager, Karen David said, “I know what it’s like to be that awkward teenager. My whole face was covered with acne. I was terribly bullied and really quiet. I wore pink speckled glasses and hid behind my hair, staring at the floor most of the time...I still look at myself as geeky Karen, so I’m always flattered when people call me beautiful.”
She’s learned that “There are more and more people that have wonderful, different ethnic backgrounds. I always tell them, ‘Hey, those are the things you should be really proud of.’”
When she was 17, Karen David won a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music and studied voice. She later returned to London and joined the original cast of “Mamma Mia!” She followed it with a record deal with BMG Europe.
Karen David released her first single It’s Me (You’re Talking To) in 2003, which became a top 10 hit in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In 2008, she released her first EP The Live Sessions. She followed it up in 2009 with Magic Carpet Ride. She has a new EP, Dust to Stars, available for download on iTunes.
Aside from singing, Karen David has appeared in “Batman Begins,” “Touch” and “The Scorpion King: Rise of a Warrior,” among other projects. In 2013, she suffered a neck injury during an episode of “Castle” when a stunt when wrong. She was released from the emergency room after a few hours, but she had to wear a neck brace.
Karen David was recently married and said “respect, patience, understanding and communicating clearly to one another are fundamentals to making a partnership work.”
Karen David splits her time between London, Toronto and Los Angeles.
