Julie Benz is an actress probably best known for her appearances in “Angel,” “Dexter” and “Saw V.” She is currently on “Defiance.”
Julie Benz grew up in Pittsburgh and when she was three, she began ice-skating. “I don’t really remember life before it, and I don’t know what it is like not to work hard at something.” She later competed in the 1988 U.S. Championships in junior ice dancing, coming in 13th. “I trained 8 hours a day 7 days a week and I had 2 weeks off in a year.” When she was 14, she suffered a stress fracture and had to take time away from the sport. Once her ice skating career ended, she got caught by the acting bug and took part in local theatre productions. She said, “I think for me it was a natural transition to move full time into acting rather than figure skating.”
Julie Benz recalled when she was 15 an acting teacher telling her she would never make it as an actress. “I still have the report card where she was like, ‘You will never make it as an actor. Your voice is horrible.’ That was the best thing that ever happened to me because I was like, ‘I’ll show you.’”
After she graduated high school, she attended New York University and studied acting. She later moved to Los Angeles and landed bit parts in a variety of shows. But it was probably her role as Darla on “Angel” that brought her to Hollywood’s attention. Other roles followed, until she found stardom on “Dexter.”

Apparently, Julie Benz auditioned for a role in “Eyes Wide Shut,” and got a callback, but she decided against it due to the nudity it required.
She also has an action figure made in her likeness from her association with “Buffy” and “Angel.” “It will be something when I’m older and have a family, to pass down through the generations, and then can all make fun of their grandma. It’s cool.”
As for her encounters with fans, Julie Benz said, “A couple times I’ve been approached when I’m buying underwear. That’s more embarrassing for me rather than for them because it’s like, ‘Oh, hello. I’m just buying some panties.”
Aside from acting, she collects antiques from every country she visits. Julie Benz is married and currently resides in Hollywood, California.
