Joelle Carter is an American actress and former model. She is best known as Ava Crowder from the FX series "Justified," but has also starred in films such as "High Fidelity" and "American Pie 2."
Joelle Marie Carter was the child of active-duty military officer Jimmy Carter (not to be confused with the U.S. President by the same name), so she spent her childhood moving all over the country. Born in Thomasville, Georgia on October 10, 1972, she attended high school in Albany, Georgia. From there, she went on to graduate from Augusta State University after receiving a full athletic scholarship for both swimming and cross-country.
Upon leaving ASU, Joelle moved to New York, where she began a career as a runway model. Her natural beauty wound up getting her signed with such famous agencies as Elite Model Management and Wilhelmina Models, which before long had her traveling all over the world. Along the way, however, she developed a taste for performing and soon began studying acting while still living in New York. After meeting her husband Andy Bates, the couple made the move to Los Angeles in order to be better equipped for careers in the entertainment industry.
It didn't take Joelle long to start landing minor roles in television and film. Within a year of her first film roles in "Suits" and "Just One Time" in 1999, she was starring on the controversial yet short-lived Peter Berg series "Wonderland," paving the way for future television roles on famous series such as "Third Watch" and her most famous role to date on FX's "Justified." But her resume doesn't stop there. She has also starred in numerous popular films including the "High Fidelity," "American Pie 2," and the 2014 horror film "Jessabelle."
