Jennifer Leann Carpenter was born on December 7, 1979 in Louisville, Kentucky to parents Catherine Mitchell and Robert Carpenter. As a child, she first attended school at St. Raphael the Archangel, and then Sacred Heart Academy. Her love of acting was evident even by this time, as she was cast as Tiny Tim in her hometown's annual "Dickens on Main Street" festival at the tender age of eight. During her last two years of high school, she began studying drama with the Walden Theatre Conservatory program. It was this experience which lead her to enroll at New York City's Juilliard School. Before she even graduated, she was cast in her first Broadway play, The Crucible, in 2002. The play also starred veteran actors Liam Neeson and Laura Linney.

From her days on Broadway, Jennifer began to land small roles in films such as "D.E.B.S." and "White Chicks." It wasn't until 2005 that she first attracted critical attention for her title role in the horror, "The Exorcism of Emily Rose." Soon after this, she was cast as Debra Morgan on the hit Showtime series, "Dexter," which she went on to play for eight seasons. Some of Jennifer's other popular roles included the main character in the horror film, "Quarantine," as well as a recurring role as a voice actress on the children's TV series, "Pound Puppies." She also starred alongside the likes of Woody Harrelson and Charlize Theron in 2007's "Battle in Seattle."

During her time on "Dexter," she met her soon-to-be husband, Michael C. Hall. The two wed in California on New Year's Eve in 2008. Unfortunately, the couple divorced in December 2011, but remained good friends, and continued to work together on "Dexter."
