Hannah Murray is a British actress. She is most popular for her roles as Cassie Ainsworth on the E4 teen drama "Skins" and Gilly on HBO's "Game of Thrones."
Born Tegan Lauren-Hannah Murray, Hannah Murray is the child of both a research technician mother and professor father at Bristol University in Bristol, England where she was born and raised. While she went on to earn an English degree from Queens' College in Cambridge later on in life, it was always the craft of acting that ultimately drove Hannah. As a teenage, she had begun taking drama lessons, which is what lead to her auditioning for her first television role as Cassie Ainsworth on "Skins."
While Hannah had initially only auditioned for her "Skins" role for the experience, little did she know at the time that the series would become famous for testing and usually casting actors and actresses with little experience to play the parts. Not surprisingly, then, she was chosen to play a major character on the series which would go on to define her very career as an actress. Fortunately, while she was at first known only for that role, her chops at legitimate theater prevented her from being pigeonholed after making her stage debut as Mia in the West End production of "That Face" at the Duke of York's Theatre in London in 2008. The critical praise she was able to illicit worked wonders from there in terms of her professional opportunities ahead.
Hannah went on to star in a number of films since her "Skins" days including "Chatroom," "Dark Shadows" and "Lily & Kat." She also continued her stage work in productions such as "Martine" at the Finborough Theatre in 2014 which even earned her an Off West End Theatre Award nomination for Best Female Performance. Of course, she has gained the most popularity from her work as Gilly on HBO's "Game of Thrones."
