Greta Celeste Gerwig was born in Sacramento, California on August 4th, 1983 to nurse, Christine, and financial consultant and computer programmer, Gordon. She was raised as a Unitarian by her parents, but at the same time attended an all-girls Catholic school. Although she had an interest in dancing at an early age, and even intended to eventually move to New York in order to obtain a degree in musical theatre, Greta wound up attending Barnard College and earning a degree in English and philosophy instead. From here, she intended to become a playwright, having even written plays that were produced by the Minor Latham Playhouse, the Columbia University Graduate School of the Arts, the Lion Theatre at Theatre Row Studios, and the Dorset Playhouse.

Of course, not all career paths wind up going the way we plan them to, and that could definitely be said of Greta's career, as well. While still attending Barnard, she was cast in director Joe Swanberg's 2006 film, "LOL." This was the start of a long and fruitful relationship with the director which also introduced her to several key players in the "mumblecore" movement, which are described as films with low budget production values, amateur actors, and heavily focused on naturalistic dialogue. Greta continued to star in films such as these, including "Nights and Weekends," which she co-direct and starred in, until her role in the 2010 indie film, "Greenberg," put her even more on audience's radar, as well as introduced her to significant other, Noah Baumbach.

Greta made her first mainstream film appearance in the 2011 rom-com, "No Strings Attached." Ever since, her push into the limelight has been more evident, later starring in the remake, "Arthur," and eventually being cast as the lead in the "How I Met Your Mother" spin-off, "How I Met Your Dad."
