Gina Rodriguez is an actress (not to be confused with the former porn actress of the same name) probably best known for her roles in “The Bold and the Beautiful” and the CW series “Jane the Virgin.”
Gina Rodriguez grew up in Chicago, the daughter of Puerto Rican parents. She began performing when she was seven with a salsa dance company. “It was fantastic, but I realized that I really wanted to talk every time we were performing. That’s a problem because when you’re dancing, if you stop to talk, that’s not really cool to the other dancers.”

Later, she applied and was accepted to NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Once she graduated, she worked in theatre. Her other roles include parts on “Army Wives" and “Law & Order,” among others.
As for her nervousness about ratings and “Jane the Virgin,” Gina said, “I can’t live in that nervous world. I can’t, because then I don’t think I’m going to give my best work to the craft. Then I’ll just be worrying about what everybody else thinks. That’s what we do in life: we worry about what everyone else thinks and we don’t really focus on what’s been given to us.”
She added, “God gave me this really awesome opportunity. I’ve been working really hard in this industry to try to get where I’m at right now and if it doesn’t happen the way I want it to happen in my head, then f*ck it. What are you going to do, right?” (Hollywoodreporter.com).
Per Time magazine, Gina Rodriguez only takes roles she feels that portray Latina women in a positive light. “To read [the "Jane the Virgin" script] about a young girl where her ethnicity wasn’t at the forefront, where her dual identity was so integrated in life that it didn’t like a separate conversation, was such a breath of fresh air.” She added, “It’s not a Latino show – it’s a human show! We talk about love, we talk about sex, we talk about dreams, we talk about failure, we talk about life. There’s nothing about that that’s different from any other ethnicity.”
As for her career in general, she said, “I’ve learned a lot about what kind of actor I want or do not want to be while being on set. I sit back and observe how other actors treat the totem pole of set politics. And truthfully growing up in the hood, mad broke and the youngest of three I was my siblings’ slave, I had to learn to share, help, accept leftovers and hand me downs with a smile.”
Gina Rodriguez would like, in the future, to “be in a position to use my voice in order to make a difference in the way minorities are viewed in the media,” (blogs.indiewire.com).
She revealed on an interview that she was diagnosed with thyroid disease when she was 19.
Her mother’s best advice to her growing up was, “You’ve got to be good to the people around you. You’ve got to be good to people on the way up, because they’re the same people you’ll see on the way down.”
Gina Rodriguez currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
