Giada said she came over to the United States in the 1970’s and she didn’t know a word of English. “The kids at school tormented me. Truly, it was horrifying the names they called me, and the teachers never really did a thing to stop it" (

She said it was hard to accept herself for a long time because “I developed breasts when I was 9 years old, and I was the only one in my class. I would literally sit in class hunched over because I was so embarrassed about my body. I think I still carry some of that around with me. I didn’t want to be known as the sexy cook. I wanted people to think I really had some cooking chops.”

Giada De Laurentiis graduated from UCLA with a degree in anthropology. She decided on a culinary career and trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. Afterwards, she moved back to Los Angeles, and worked at Spago and founded GDL Foods, a catering company.

She landed at the Food Network in 2002 after a staffer saw an article about her and her family in Food & Wine magazine. In 2012, she was inducted into the Culinary Hall of Fame.

She said if she could change anything about herself it would be that she had longer legs and arms. “My husband is 6’ 2” and sometimes, if I’m wearing flats, it’s like he’s taking his teenage daughter out.”

She is also a mother to daughter Jade Marie De Laurentiis Thompson. Though she never thought she was going to have kids, she said her daughter is “probably the best thing I’ve ever done in my life.”

She has been dogged by rumors of infidelity, especially by claims from singer John Mayer.

Giada said when she is at home that she works very hard “to be Todd’s wife and Jade’s mother. "I have no problem going back to those traditional roles…all men want to be treated like kings in a relationship, and I think if women don’t indulge that sometimes, their men are likely to stray and look for someone who can” (

Giada De Laurentiis lost her brother when he was 30 to melanoma. She admitted it made her a bit of a hypochondriac. “It made me work harder. It made me really appreciate every day I’m here and feel good.”
