As for growing up in El Monte, Emily Rios said, “When I was young, I thought it was normal to go to sleep to the sounds of sirens. People on my block were in the biggest gang in the city. They were my close friends -- they showed me the ropes, who to watch out for. There, in El Monte, it's like one big home for everybody -- you kind of get intimidated, but they're the nicest people. In West Covina, they can treat a person like complete sh*t, like you're a dog.”

Emily Rios got her start in acting after she was discovered during a day out at a shopping mall. She then appeared in the 2005 short film "For Them" and the 2006 film "Quinceañera."

She said, "In Latino culture, the quinceañera's a big thing -- it's when a girl becomes a woman. But I think age is just a number -- you become a woman with the responsibilities you take on and the decisions you make. I started realizing that every day is a gift -- you have every day to be thankful you're alive."

When asked what the most challenging moment for her to play on "Breaking Bad," she said, "Playing a mother who is a recovering addict. I’ve seen it too many times. I wanted to play it in a more heartfelt way but you have to let go of 'I’m a good mother,' because recovering addicts lose that natural ability to say no. She is trying to recover but when Jesse offers her some [meth] she’s open to it. That’s very heartbreaking to play."

In an interview at TCA’s FX day, Emily Rios announced that she was gay. She described her coming out process to her family: “Mexican-Americans especially — because this generation, we come into America and your family wants to be proud. You want to come to this country and say "This is what I have to show for it. I brought my family and we’re living our better life.’ For my family, my mom didn’t want me to live a difficult life. She brought me here for a better one so she’s like ‘Your coming out… I don’t want this to be this. I want you to be comfortable.'"

Emily shared her New Year’s resolution on Twitter: "laughing harder, smiling wider, standing taller, walking lighter, dancing crazier, hugging longer, living grander, loving louder #2015"
