Her full name is Christy Nicole Turlington; her nicknames include Turly and Christy Burns, and she is sometimes referred to as “the ultimate supermodel.” Christy is a mix of English and Salvadoran ancestry. With her ancestry, it’s no surprise she speaks both English and Spanish. Growing up, she was into horses and horseback riding, and she took part in local competitions.

She was “discovered” by a photographer when she was 15 while horseback riding. In her modeling career, she has been on the covers of nearly 1,000 magazines since 1987. If you can name it, she’s probably graced it. At the height of her fame, she was part of the “trinity” along with Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell.

She is credited with introducing the naval piercing trend after she showed her piecing at a fashion show in 1993. In the same year, she appeared in the nude for a PETA poster, stating, “I’d rather go naked than wear fur.”

In 1994, she went back to school and graduated cum laude from the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU. In 2000, she was diagnosed with emphysema. She smoked up to a pack of cigarettes a day from the age of 13 to 26.

Christy Turlington said midway through her modeling career, “This isn’t who I am. It’s great, but I want to do other things.” “Modeling gave me the kind of confidence that a lot of girls in their teenage years don’t have. In the end, I think that the industry saved me from having to be self-conscious.”

In 2010, she founded “Every Mother Counts,” a campaign to end preventable deaths caused by pregnancy and childbirth around the world. Part of her inspiration was the complications she suffered in her own 2003 childbirth.
