Catherine Elise “Cate” Blanchett is an Australian actress and director probably best known for her role as “Elizabeth,” and as the Elf Queen Galadriel in “Lord of the Rings" trilogy. She has won a variety of accolades, and is nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress in “Blue Jasmine.”
Cate Blanchett is a mix of Scottish, English and French ancestry. Her father was American and her mother was Australian. Her father died when she was 10 (when he was 40) from a heart attack. Growing up, she said, “Acting was fun, but I don’t think it crossed my mind that I could do it. I thought the most important thing was security.”

Cate later graduated from Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1992. She went on to perform in theater, television series, and feature films, but her breakthrough was the title character in the film “Elizabeth.”
Her resume is varied with roles, including parts in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” “The Shipping News” and “The Aviator,” among many others. Four of her five Oscar nominations are for playing real people (Queen Elizabeth, Katharine Hepburn and Bob Dylan.)
Supposedly after her role in “The Lord of the Rings,” Cate Blanchett kept and bronzed her elf ear prosthetics. She said, “’Lord of the Rings’ was like stepping into a videogame for me. It was another world completely. But to be honest, I basically did it so that I could have the ears. I thought they would really work with my bare head.”
She said of acting and her career, “I’m endlessly disappointed, which is what propels me into the next project, probably, not to repair the damage, but to kind of hopefully keep developing. Otherwise there’s no reason to keep doing it, is there?” She said she could be a “real pessimist. You know that when you win an Oscar and you walk offstage and your first thought is: ‘Oh God, I’ve peaked.’”
As for getting married, Cate Blanchett said, “We sort of clicked. With other people, maybe they don’t get you. But with someone who does, you go, ‘Ooh, I’m got! Someone’s got me!’ It’s a relief and a pleasure.” In recent years, she and her husband took over as co-artistic directors of the Sydney Theatre Company.
She was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in December 2008.
Cate Blanchett has three children, Roman Robert Upton, Dashiell John Upton and Ignatius Martin Upton. When not filming, she resides in Sydney, Australia.
