Brit Marling is an actor, writer and producer probably best known for her roles in the films “Arbitrage” and “Another Earth.” The name Brit comes from her Norwegian great-grandmother.
Brit Marling was born in Chicago and was the daughter of real estate developers. Because her parents moved a lot, she said, “I sort of reconstructed an identity in order to fit in. I began to see identity as an ephemeral concept.” She graduated from high school in Orlando, Florida in 2000.
She attended Georgetown University with a dual major in economics and studio arts. She was her class valedictorian. She said, “I wasn’t actually very good at economics. My brain doesn’t work very well, in terms of mathematics.” After she graduated in 2005, she interned at Goldman Sachs and decided that the world of high finance didn’t interest her.
Even though she was offered a job on Wall Street, Brit Marling turned it down and then moved to Cuba with Mike Cahill and helped on the documentary Boxers and Ballerinas. She said, “Living in Cuba made me unafraid of whatever could happen to me. Nothing seemed as scary as waking up at 40 and realizing that I had not lived a very courageous life.”
There was also a stint where she hung out with a group of fregans (who inspired the characters in the film ‘The East). She said, “I was really moved by the bravery of people from our generation who were just dropping out. The refusal to participate in this – there is a lot of integrity in that. They were living these meaningful, full lives.”
Brit Marling added in a separate interview, “At some point you realize that your life is not just going to start one day in the future, that you’re living it.” She moved to Los Angeles with some friends to pursue a career in screenwriting. She found that she easily landed opportunities to appear in horror films, but those roles didn’t interest her, either, so according to the New York Times, “she decided to create roles for herself.”
She has written on Twitter “I feel badly 4 ppl who have never had their hearts broken or been fired or had an epic fail – they don’t know what they are missing.”
