As a child, Andrea Riseborough was very shy and got into school plays, not to be seen or noticed, but because she enjoyed “performing and having that rapport with the audience.” She got into Shakespeare when she was eight years old. “It’s become an important part of my life and it has [affected] my approach to art for the past 20 years.”

Andrea Riseborough trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. She was also a member of the National Youth Theatre. She said, “I love my work and I love working hard. But I feel lucky every day that in this capitalist society in which we live, one can make one’s living doing what one loves.”

She said, “I think playing different characters has afforded me an anonymity that many actors don’t have…it means I can quite happily get the bus or do whatever I want to do.”

As for acting, Andrea Riseborough said, “It’s a very strange life. I love the company of actros, but the crazier it gets, the more I’ve come to realize how valuable my time is with my friends who work on the land or are builders, or, you know, make music. Work in offices. Run shops.”

She said if she weren’t an actress, she would like to be an author. “Either that or the proprietor of a pool hall in Texas where I’d show cabaret with homosexual undertones.”

She is notably not active on social media. She only joined Facebook once in order to track down her now-boyfriend Joe Appel after she lost his phone number. She lives temporarily in Los Feliz, a Los Angeles neighborhood, but “our house is in Idaho, just outside Boise. It’s breathtakingly beautiful there – so natural and fresh and extraordinary.”

A few tidbits: her favorite book is Howard Zinnn’s A People’s History of the United States. “I’m an alien here, so reading it has been very enlightening." She answered if she had to be stuck in an elevator with anyone, she would choose “Anais Nin. If she were around today, she’d be utterly fascinating to talk to.”
