Her full name is Ally Maki Matsumura. Maki is her great grandmother’s name. She said she grew up in a “relatively Caucasian, suburbia area, and I reveled in it because I liked being the one who looked different….looking different is usually a great thing.”

She got into acting when she was about 10 after she did her first play. “The moment I was singing, dancing and wearing these fun costumes, I was like, ‘How could anything else ever compare?’”

Ally Maki said she was shy growing up. “I barely spoke at all. Until I was about 16 or so I was still very, very shy and I hadn’t really come into my own. It’s only recently that I’ve become this crazy, silly girl.” She moved to Los Angeles when she was 14. She came to LA for the summer. “I thought it was just going to be a summer camp type of thing. I was only scheduled to go for a couple months and just never went back home.”

Ally Maki was a member of The Valli Girls, a girl band. She sang and played keyboard. They were signed to Columbia/Sony Records. She said, “Singing was more of a passion for my own enjoyment and spirit rather than a career option. As far as the music business goes, I don’t think it’s the right place for me.” She added, “I think a lot of my spirit was broken – you have to be a certain person…I’ve always been sort of a lone wolf; I like to do my own thing.”

She got her start on “She’s So Raven” and then “My Wife and Kids.” She has also appeared in “10 Things I Hate About You” and “Bones,” among other projects. She almost appeared in the film “Elephant White,” after making it to the finals, but she didn’t make the final cut.

An average day for her is waking up and working out. “I’ve been learning from my friends how to relax a little because I’m such a naturally structured person; if I’m not doing something productive I go crazy.” She described herself as crazy, emotional and sarcastic.

As for keeping her age a secret, Ally Maki said, “[Knowing my age] kind of ruins the magic or illusion of it…thankfully, I’m Asian, so you can’t really tell.”

As for acting as a business, she said, “It’s funny how it’s always the same thing – you get a job and then you’re back to square one, back in the game. Got to get that next job.”

She told the that some of her pet peeves are when guys wear Ed Hardy shirts. When looking for guys to date, she needs someone with a sense of humor. “Good teeth. I have a thing for dark skin and dark hair, not much for blondes.”

Ally Maki carries a notebook with her all time in case she gets ideas. She is single and resides in Los Angeles.
