The Last of Us 2 Has Been Put on Hold

Brainstorming sessions for The Last of Us 2 have been put on hold while developer Naughty Dog puts all its weight behind the upcoming Uncharted 4.

It hasn’t been confirmed whether Naughty Dog are definitely going to go down the route of a sequel to the critically acclaimed 2013 game The Last of Us, though consumer demand is still there for its successor. Given that the original game came to an end on an arguably perfect note, many believe that Naughty Dog shouldn’t turn it into a franchise.

However, money speaks louder than words, and there’s a lot of money to be made from The Last of Us 2, meaning the developer will be looking at a way they could create a successful sequel to one of the best games of the last console generation. Whether or not this will see Joel and Ellie return, or whether it will focus on a brand new selection of survivors remains to be seen. While they had already enlisted a team of brainstormers to think up ideas for the potential sequel, this has now been put on hold while the company firmly focuses upon Uncharted 4.

In an interview with GameInformer magazine, Naughty Dog’s Bruce Straley said: “We totally get it, because we have those same feelings as well. We have brainstormed sequel ideas for The Last of Us, and we’ve brainstormed ideas for new games, but all of that is put on ice right now while we work on Uncharted 4.” Straley also stated that those who claim The Last of Us 2 is definitely happening are wrong, as the rumors that the company is definitely working on the sequel are “based upon one big assumption.”

Regardless of Straley’s comments, it’s more than likely that The Last of Us 2 will be released at some point, even though it likely won’t be in the near future. Honestly, I’m more excited for these new games that the developer is conceptualizing, and I hope that when Uncharted 4 is out of the gate we’ll see a brand new IP from Naughty Dog in the following few years. I can but hope.
