Gamescom 2013: Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls Expansion Announced; Trailers Included

Blizzard saw the beginning of Gamescom 2013 as the perfect opportunity to reveal its first expansion for Diablo 3.

Called Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls, as rumored, the expansion makes several game-changing addition to the vanilla product. For one, the Crusader is the first new class to be added to the game. It specialized in mid-range combat with a flail and shield, and uses a resource called Wrath. It is based on Diablo 2‘s Paladin, a highly requested class for fans of the series.

The level cap has been increased to 70, and with that hundreds of new weapons, skills for every class, story experience, and enemies will be presented. In the Reaper of Souls story, you will be traveling “beyond the world of Sanctuary as they seek to unlock the mysteries of Malthael, the Angel of Death.” The horror theme includes new bosses such as The Seraph, Summoner of the Dead, Executioner, and Death Maiden, all with special loot to drop.

In an effort to solve issues with customers being unhappy with Diablo 3’s linear style, Loot Runs have been added. Loot Runs 15 to 20 minute experiences through completely random dungeons with, you guessed it, great loot to earn.

For those who have been unhappy with the Auction House system or social features on PC are in for bad news, virtually nothing is being changed about either. Thankfully, Blizzard has stated that loot will drop much less often in Reaper of Souls, making items much more significant. Made better, legendary items will have special effects depending upon the class that equips them. More details will be shared at a later date.

If you really can’t stand how the AH impacts the loot experience then your best bet is to play the PS3 or Xbox 360 version coming on September 3rd. A PS4 version is coming next year, too.

To fully show off the expansion, Blizzard released two trailers. First up is the opening cinematic trailer for Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls.

Next up is the gameplay trailer.

Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls currently has no release date, but will be coming to all platforms.
