First Look: Melissa Benoist as Supergirl on CBS

Meet your new Girl of Steel.

The Supergirl pilot is finally beginning production this week, after a long casting and development process. To mark the occasion (and to undercut the inevitable leaks), CBS has released two photos of series star, Melissa Benoist in costume as Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl.

The costume is not that far from the one that Supergirl wore in the 1984 feature film of the same name, and through most of Supergirl’s comic appearances in the early ‘90s. The iconic red skirt is still in place, although the colors are much darker, her boots are higher and the Superman “S” on her chest is missing most of the yellow.

But all things considered, it seems fairly faithful to the source material. Academy Award winning designer Colleen Atwood created the new Supergirl costume.

But all things considered, it seems fairly faithful to the source material. Academy Award winning designer Colleen Atwood created the new Supergirl costume. In a statement, Atwood said “In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.”

Chyler Leigh costars in Supergirl as Kara’s older foster sister, Alexandria Danvers, with David Harewood as Hank Henshaw, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, and Mehcad Brooks as a more “alpha male” incarnation of Jimmy Olsen.

CBS has previously released the following description of Supergirl: “Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and become the hero she was destined to be.”

Supergirl will likely premiere on CBS in Fall 2015.
