Jada Pinkett-Smith Seals Her Fate on Gotham

Prior to the launch of Gotham, Fox hyped the casting of Jada Pinkett-Smith as Fish Mooney, a crime boss that nobody had ever heard of because she was created by the writers of Gotham for this show.

While Fish’s lack of a comic book counterpart could have kept her fate in the air, it seems that Pinkett-Smith will ultimately decide what happens to her character. While appearing on Live With Kelly & Michael, Pinkett-Smith was asked if she will return for Gotham Season 2 and she replied “I signed for a year, and the year is up.”

Pinkett-Smith’s potential departure makes sense given the way that Fish was removed from power a few episodes ago. Since then, Fish has been placed in a subplot with The Dollmaker that barely seems connected to the rest the show.

Ultimately, Pinkett-Smith’s exit could be the best thing for Gotham. The writing of the series isn’t going to improve overnight, but there were already too many characters vying for screentime. Fish never grabbed the imagination of the viewers in the way that Robert Lord Taylor’s Oswald Cobblepot did. She also seemed to be out of place on the series.
