Joe Madureira’s Battle Chasers Will Return As a Comic & Video Game

In the late ‘90s, Joe Madureira was one of the top artists in comics after a length run on Uncanny X-Men for Marvel. When Madureira entered the world of creator owned comics, he released his fantasy title, Battle Chasers in 1998.

Battle Chasers mixed fantasy with steampunk and followed a loosely connected group of characters named Garrison (a fallen warrior), Gully (a young girl empowered by magic gauntlets), Knolan (a wizard), Red Monika (a bounty hunter) and Calibretto (a war golem).

However, Madureira abandoned Battle Chasers after nine issues and left the comic industry in 2001 to work in the video game industry. As the creative director of THQ, Madureira was a key player in the development of the first Darksiders video game. Although Madureira has since returned for a few comic projects, Battle Chasers remained unfinished.

Earlier today (via Polygon.com), Madureira announced that the Battle Chasers comic will finally return to print with a conclusion to the longstanding cliffhanger ending. Additionally, Madureira said that future storylines will be three issues in length.

Madureira and Ryan Stefanelli’s Airship Syndicate is also developing Battle Chasers as a role playing game in the vein of Darksiders for PC, consoles and potentially for tablets.

“Even though the game mechanically is going to be very different from Darksiders, I think we’re still really going to be doing everything we can to make sure that the dungeon exploration side of the game is soaked with lots of fun adventurous elements,” explained Stefanelli.

Madureira added that “I partially just want to update it… I think it’s going to get a visual overhaul too. My art style and storytelling style, everything’s sort of changed and evolved over the years.”

The revival of the Battle Chasers comic does not currently have a publisher attached to it. Nor does the project have a release date. But given Madureira’s history with deadlines, it probably won’t be soon.
