Felicity Jones Beats Out Tatiana Maslany For “Star Wars” Lead

The highly-anticipated “Star Wars” movie has cast its lead female actor, and despite Canadian hopes that it would be home-grown star Tatiana Maslany of “Orphan Black,” the role was given to UK Academy Award-nominated actress Felicity Jones.

Jones also beat out American actress Rooney Mara (“The Social Network,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”).

According to CBC News, there is very little that is known about the “Star Wars” film-version spin-off other than the release date, which is slated for December 16, 2016. The second of two scheduled flicks, the title “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” comes out December 18th of this year. It stars Oscar Isaac (“Drive”), Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford. It’s directed and co-written by J.J. Abrams.

Also, The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Gareth Edwards is directing and Chris Weitz (who was just hired last week) is writing – Weitz is replacing Gary Whitta, who wrote the first draft of the script.

A male lead for the flick has yet to be chosen but rumours are speculating that casting agents are considering Aaron Paul of “Breaking Bad” fame or Edgar Ramirez (“Wrath of the Titans”).
