Peter Capaldi Will Return For ‘Doctor Who’ Season 9

Despite rumors to the contrary, Peter Capaldi will not be a single season Doctor.

During a “Doctor Who” Season 8 press event in London, The Hollywood Reporter asked showrunner Steven Moffat about Capaldi’s status for the next season and Moffat said that he was confirmed. However, Moffat was coy about whether Capaldi’s co-star, Jenna Coleman will remain with the series beyond the “Doctor Who” Christmas special this year. The eighth season finale seemed like it was designed to write Coleman’s Clara Oswald out of the series.

At the event, Moffat was joined on stage by Capaldi and Coleman, as well as Michelle Gomez and Samuel Anderson, both of whom had pivotal roles in the eighth season of “Doctor Who.”

One of the more intriguing things to come out of the panel was Capaldi’s admission that he could have been the Eighth Doctor on the “Doctor Who” TV movie for Fox in 1996. According to Capaldi, he was approached to audition for the role, “But I turned down the opportunity… I loved it so much that I didn’t want to have the disappointment of going for something that I would never get.”

BBC hasn’t announced when the new season of “Doctor Who” will begin production, but the series will likely return in the third or fourth quarter of 2015.
