‘Game of Thrones’ Season 5 May Open With a Flashback

Over the last few months, Sean Bean has expressed his willingness to return to “Game of Thrones” as Ned Stark in order to film flashbacks that would reveal an important part of Jon Snow’s backstory.

While the “Game of Thrones” showrunners, David Benioff and Dan Weiss have long resisted using flashbacks in the series, the duo has admitted that at least one flashback is coming next season.

Via Entertainment Weekly, a translation from Benioff and Weiss’ recent Q&A in Spain featured a very telling quote: “By making the first season, we set a rule: No prophecies, dreams or flashbacks. We failed the first two and this season the third. So yes, this season will finally have flashbacks.” It’s worth noting that the original Spanish website that posted the translation didn’t specifically attribute the quote to either man.

That said, EW has confirmed that the opening scene of “Game of Thrones” Season 5 will likely be a flashback. But the report notes that this could change in editing.

Former “Game of Thrones” star Charles Dance recently teased that he wasn’t done with the series yet, which may also mean that Tywin Lannister could appear in flashback as well.

“Game of Thrones” Season 5 is currently filming and the series will return to HBO in Spring 2015.
